The debit card would never work despite…

The debit card would never work despite sufficient funds. The first time I asked about this, I was told there were no "declines" and the transaction was approved. That was not true. After numerous attempts with no resolution, I have given up and will stop using the account.

Grasshopper Bank ... Are they still in business?

We submitted an application to open an account with Grasshopper Bank on June 9th, under the understanding that their review process is typically completed within three business days. As of June 24th, we have yet to receive any response. Despite being assigned a personal banker, communication has ceased entirely. At this point, it’s fair to conclude that Grasshopper Bank has proven to be unresponsive and unreliable — ultimately a disappointing use of time and effort.

According to our records, due to a technical issue during your initial submission, Client Services provided instructions for the manual account opening process–which you promptly followed. Once submitted, manual applications are reviewed by our BSA team as part of our policy and procedures. Unfortunately, your completed application did not reach the BSA team as intended, and as a result, your review was unintentionally delayed. This was an internal oversight on our part, and we regret the inconvenience it caused.

We understand how frustrating this must have been, especially after taking the additional steps to complete your application manually. We understand how frustrating delays can be—especially when you’re running a startup and need quick access to funds. That’s never the experience we want for our clients. However, to protect both the bank and our clients, every deposit is subject to our Funds Availability Policy. New accounts must meet certain criteria—primarily time open and transaction history—before they qualify for reduced hold times on checks. Because your account had been open only seven days when the check was deposited, it did not yet meet the threshold for accelerated release, so the funds were held in accordance with that policy.

As a digital‑first bank, security is at the core of what we do. We take great pride in maintaining the safety and integrity of our platforms, and careful verification of new deposits helps us protect all clients from fraud and returned items. Wherever it’s appropriate and reasonable, we work to expedite the process so you can access your money sooner.

I had a frustrating experience when I first signed up—I couldn’t access my account for two days due to login issues. Additionally, transferring money into the account is noticeably slow compared to platforms like Cash App, where transfers are instant. I’ve since started using Mercury, which offers a much better user experience and more robust features.

Regarding your note on transfer speed—we hear you. We understand how important it is to have instant or near-instant access to funds. That's why we’re actively exploring a range of technologies, payment rails, and solutions to improve funds availability in a way that’s both secure, efficient and cost-effective for our users and for us.

We moved to Grasshopper simply because of rates - but then....

We moved to Grasshopper simply because they offered a better rate than our primary bank. I felt at first they were a "faceless" organization, but that all changed when Nadia S and Robert B reached out from the bank to let us know that we could move our balances to an even HIGHER interest rate account - above 3%. We met - yes, real live humans - and they showed us how we could open a different type of account. What kind of company reaches out proactively to HELP you make more money from them? Grasshopper did.

I signed up with this bank to explore…

I signed up with this bank to explore and compare the features with my other business checking account. Unfortunately, I never received the debit card. Someone else got my mail, activated the debit card, and withdrew nearly $500. That is not secure at all.

When using traditional U.S. mail, there is an unfortunate but real risk of bad actors intercepting mail and impersonating individuals. While this type of fraud is beyond our control, it’s one of the reasons we are a digital-first bank and strongly encourage the use of our virtual debit cards whenever possible. They provide faster, more secure access to your funds by avoiding the vulnerabilities of traditional mail and using a physical card with advanced card controls that give you greater visibility and control over how, when, and where your card is used.

Please know that this is not the intended or desired outcome of your banking experience. Our team is actively investigating this incident and taking it very seriously. Based on what you've described, it appears this may be a case of identity theft, as someone would have needed access to your personal identifying information (PII) to activate the card, confirm account details, and withdraw the funds. We recommend continuing to monitor your account closely and consider placing fraud alerts or credit freezes as an added precaution.

"Regulated Bank" doesn't follow regulations

The bank claims to be a regulated bank (which they are) and insists that potential customers must undergo verification of their identity (which I did). Despite meeting the criteria outlined by their own documentation, they refused to open an account. They proceeded to explain that for "security reasons" they're not at liberty to explain why they denied the application. They further proceeded to claim "Grasshopper is a regulated bank, and all of our clients are required to meet certain verification requirements before we can open your account."

Apparently meeting those certain verification requirements doesn't mean anything.

Given how many other people have similar issues, I can't imagine anyone actually recommending them.

Grateful their incompetence gave me time to rethink my choice

I went to Grasshopper based on the write up at NerdWallet to open up a business checking account. My application was immediately denied with no explanation (but pointing me to their legal document, which outlines everything required, which I had). When I called to inquire they said they’d look into it and then sent me a request for photos of my driver’s license front and bank and a selfie of me holding my driver’s license. I sent it back through their docusign request within hours. Several days later I got a reminder that they were still waiting for information from me. I wrote back with the confirmation from docusign that I had already sent it. Given this incompetence regarding opening an account I looked further and found all of the reviews on the trouble that people have actually using the bank, and was grateful that my initial application was not approved and I chose to use another bank. When I asked them to stop my application and delete my information, they refused. There is no need for them to have my info and I echo the experience of others that this bank appears quite shady, and I’ve lost confidence in Nerd Wallet for recommending them.
