Recently, Safety Wings has become increasingly frustrating with constant checks and recalculations.
But that's not the main issue. The main problem is that Safety Wings often ignores documents that have already been shared in a claim. Sometimes, you have to send the same document twice or specifically point out the relevant part in emails.
Also, I was recently told that I had exceeded my dental coverage, which wasn’t true. When I asked for details, Safety Wings support listed claims from the previous policy year.
They only admitted the mistake after I pointed out the exact dates of those claims.
It's a rapid decline - from one of the best insurance providers to a slow and greedy one.

BACKGROUND:
I've been very happy with SafetyWing previously - their service and coverage have been excellent. However, recent service levels have been very poor.
THE PROBLEM:
SafetyWing's claims system incorrectly processed my premier membership under their Standard Plan from AT LEAST August 2024 to May 2025. This caused systematic underpayment on every claim for nine months.
I am still unable to resubmit a optometry claim from service in April. And paid 10% copayments for the period.
TIMELINE OF POOR SERVICE:
- August 2024: Problem began (possibly earlier), seems to have been a technical glitch
- Early May 2025: Issue discovered and query logged
- May 2025: First correct processing in 10 months
- 2 June 2025: Query logged with technical team about inability to resubmit optometry claim
- 18 June 2025: Promised updates from developers - none received
- July 2025: Still waiting after 16+ days of silence, emails go unanswered
CURRENT IMPACT:
I cannot access medical care without outstanding reimbursements
SERVICE ISSUES:
- Account manager intimitantly responsive but unable to resolve
- Technical team provides no updates despite promises
- System appears fixed but no process to reclaim underpayments
- No timelines beyond "as soon as possible"
- Persistent lack of email responses
- Hours spent checking statements to assess when the issue started - no information provided by SafetyWing
BOTTOM LINE:
When a health insurance provider's system errors prevent access to medical care for nearly a year, that's unacceptable. The lack of urgency and communication makes this worse.
STATUS: Unresolved as of July 2025. Would not recommend until resolved.

They give you the runaround and try to do anything not to pay.

Denied a claim stating it was a pre existing condition even though it was listed on medical note as “Acute”. Apparently you are not allowed to experience symptoms like headaches from an illness more than once in your life otherwise it is considered a pre existing illness. Will never use this scam insurance again.

At the moment, I have no problems with this company
All my requests for compensation have been approved in full. However, I have only received cheap treatment that is about or less than the cost of my monthly payment
I give it a 4 because this company has completely excluded everything related to my chronic condition (grade III scoliosis), including diagnostics and preventive measures such as massage, even though they are included in the plan
I generally understand why this is so. But I believe that excluding diagnostics is putting your customers at risk of future problems
It would be correct to leave the possibility of diagnostics within the budget for it (which is already quite small)

5* plus, that's what I give SafetyWing. From my very first contact a couple of months ago until signing up the service has been outstanding. Prompt responses, all questions answered in a way that left not doubts and having the customers needs in sight. One of the best experiences in a very long time, especially since these days it being quite a rarity.
I also think that the website is very easy to navigate and their products are competitive. Getting 10% off when paying in full is a huge perk that safes quite a bit of money.

I had an emergency room visit, called them from the emergency room gushing blood. The rep said "it was handled". When I submitted my claim 48 hours later, they deducted the 30% penalty for not getting pre-approval. These guys are a scam. Avoid like the plague.

Before purchasing, check the process for reporting theft in your destination country. Theft must be reported to police within 24 hours which is fine if you speak the native language and police provide ways to follow up after you have left the country. If you can't do this you are just wasting money with this policy as no claim will be paid unless you can get a police report.
I recently had belongings stolen in Vietnam. Attended the local police station to report the theft. This was a difficult process as I cannot read, write or speak Vietnamese and was not allowed to take the form away or take photos. In the end I paid the "fee" for the police to process the report, was then moved on and told the report number would be sent to me. It is very clear that no report was ever going to be filed by the police and having left the country there is no way to follow up.
Had I known Safetywing provides no consideration to effort for trying to report the crime I would not have taken cover in a country where reporting crime is near impossible for foreigners.

On June 6, 2025, I filed for a claim for my wife, who is my dependent for Safetywing. In my claim, I attached a medical report, along with the receipt for the medicines we bought.
A few days later, I received an email saying "After review, we're still missing a clear medical report for your claim dated 06 June, 2025 for XXXX.XX PHP (The amount of my claim). This document must contain the diagnosis, reason for visit, and treatment details, as it verifies the medical necessity of the service. Per our policy, medical reports should be on official letterhead from your doctor or provider".
What's annoying is that literally everything from the diagnosis, treatment and official letterhead from the doctor, was right there. I'm dumbfounded as to how the claims team managed to miss those details, when it's clearly there. To me, it seems like the person who reviewed the document didn't bother to read it at all. I mean seriously, how can you miss the official letterhead, it's the very first thing you see.
For the next 2 weeks, I went back and forth with these guys, sending screenshots, highlighting every single thing that they're looking for and asking for an explanation as to why they refuse to acknowledge it. It's like talking a wall. I tried talking to the customer care, but they're pretty much useless. They kept telling me that they will relay my message to the claims team, and that they don't have the authority to confirm if the diagnosis, treatment and official letterhead is there. It's like they are deliberately sabotaging my claim.
They won't be able to deny it's sabotage, because literally, everything that they said that was missing was right there in that medical report. Eventually, I got fed up and I asked, is it the handwriting that you're having a problem with? Afterwards, they emailed me and now they're making it seem that the handwriting has always been the issue from the start. This is gaslighting at it's finest.
At the time of this review, it has now been 24 days since I filed for my claim and they haven't acknowledged the clear lapses on their end. They have given me this generic apology for the inconvenience bullshit. But again, I'm still waiting for them to take accountability and just admit that someone did not go over the document. Someone mistakenly sent an email asking the client to send something that's already available to them.
There is a difference between telling someone that something is missing, versus telling someone there is something you don't understand. Going back to the handwriting issue. So, you're telling me, that safetywing, an insurance company, can't find of a way to read or decipher the medical report submitted to them? If the concern, is the legitimacy of the medical report, why not email the hospital? Why not email the doctor? I've provided them those information at the beginning, why not utilize it?
Based on my experience, it's clear that the claims team sucks. Instead of doing their job and making it easier for the clients to process their claim, they will make you do all the work, in my case, unnecessary work.
Imagine, they asked me to go back to my doctor and tell him to rewrite his medical report because safetywing can't read it. Let that sink in. Just imagine, if you're the doctor and you have patients lined up, waiting to get treated and then someone will take 10-15 minutes of your time to let you know, the insurance company wants you to rewrite my medical report because they can't read it. It's very disrespectful, it certainly damaged my relationship with this doctor and it could have easily been avoided if the claims team actually do their job.
If there's an option to give half a star or zero star, I would have done that.

It was my first time submitting a claim—and it was flawless.
I honestly couldn’t believe how smooth the entire process was.
I was outside of Paris at a château for a team gathering, and on the last day, while walking the grounds, I was bitten by a tick. I didn’t realize it until hours later when I arrived at my Airbnb in Paris. When I saw the tick still attached to my skin, I started to panic.
I immediately downloaded the SafetyWing app and messaged customer service. They responded quickly with clear instructions and helped guide me to the nearest emergency room. The app even reminded me to request the right documents from the hospital to complete my claim.
The hospital experience was surprisingly pleasant. I paid $380 for the visit and the antibiotics. I submitted the claim on Monday, and by Wednesday the reimbursement was already in my account. I was blown away by how easy and fast the process was.
I feel so much more confident traveling now, knowing I’m covered by a company that actually delivers on its promises.
