Headspace Deceptive Pricing

I used the Headspace Inc app for many years at an annual subscription rate of $95.88. I recently discovered that Headspace lowered its annual subscription rate from $95.88 to $69.99 in March 2024. They continued charging many existing subscribers – including myself – the original, higher rate without any notice, price adjustment, or refund. I was charged $95.88 in April, 2024 as well as April, 2025 … both after the annual rate changed to $69.99 in March, 2024. I became aware of the pricing change only as I was about to recommend the app to a friend . I believe this is a deceptive billing practice that unfairly targets existing, loyal customers.

When I contacted Headspace Support, I didn’t ask to cancel – I simply asked for a refund of the overpayment(s). Instead, they refunded $95.88 for 2025 (2024 still overpaid) however then canceled my subscription entirely, immediately cutting off access to a service I relied on every day. I’ve now lost access to something I paid for, and I’ve apparently been overcharged for multiple years. This isn’t just poor customer service, it is an unethical business practice … a serious failure in ethics, transparency and a breach of customer trust. I expected better from a company that promotes mindfulness and trust.

Research indicates that Headspace is not profitable. Revenue $195 M in 2023, down from $235 M in 2022. Subscriber decline. 3.3 M in 2022 to 2.8 M in 2023. When a company is under pressure to hit profitability targets, especially after a revenue dip and a shrinking user base, there is a temptation to quietly lean on legacy subscribers who may not be watching their renewals too closely. Loyalty should be rewarded, not exploited.

I would like Headspace to proactively scrub its records, retroactively refund overpayments to all affected users, continue their service without disruption and ensure transparency in all future price changes.

Scam…

They charged me for a full year even though I cancelled my subscription on time. I CANCELLED MY SUBSCRIPTION ON TIME!!!! And still got charged. I was furious. Good I took a screenshot of a cancellation. It still took a big fight (despite an evidence!!!) that I cancelled it on time to get my money back. Be aware - it’s a scam. Also, headspace used to be good 10 years ago. Now - it has gone down in quality and became some cheap messy concoction of poor meditations. You can find better ones on YouTube for free. Stay away from headspace

Meditations all sound very similar, no real content

A lot of the meditations are almost exactly the same. Notice the body, focus on the breath, let the sounds around pass by etc etc. I just listened to 23 mins on anger management and they only talked about anger for 2 mins of the 23! There might be better meditations but after using headspace for 2 months I'm moving on. Will find another app.

Life changing

This is a great company that's changed my life very positively. I'm so happy I found it, there may be other good meditation apps but I've been happy with Headspace. Also, their customer care has been great.

I don’t mind paying for the app as it can help with mindfulness. I do mind that they charge money for a non working app. The app has been down for weeks now and not only are they not fixing it, they are ignoring requests and telling me the issue is with apple. Not surprised by the low rating

Be careful

Be careful, you're lured by a free trial but you get subscribed and they take a yearly subscription without asking beforehand. Looks like a scam to me. When I tried to cancel they came up with some ... that they do not take the payment so cannot refund. I can see from reviews it's their usual practice. My advice - avoid

A scam business

A scam business, trapping innocent consumers into their 14 days Free trial lie. Then they withdraw an annual amount and state their vague Terms and conditions part 2.3. Extremely thick-skinned scammers. Possible ways to fight: Financial ombudsman, small claims court, try CMA but nothing will happen. Search for their UK registered office in the Company House for more info about them: HEADSPACE MEDITATION LIMITED.

I used to enjoy using Headspace and I recently sued the free trial and cancelled it, but I recently got charged and I requested a refund. They told me I missed the cancellation period and that I can continue to use the app for year. I was not happy with this especially as I have cancelled it and the app videos are all locked, so I am very concerned with how I have been charged for something that I cannot use.

Beware the subscription trap

As many have already said this company has a terrible reputation for subscription traps. Totally contrary to the image they like to portray they have caused many no end of stress. I will be avoiding forevermore.

Liars

Liars !

They will sign you up for the free trial, won’t send you an email to tell you it is over and bill you a full year.
Then in contact with the team they assured me they removed me from the subscription and cancelled auto renewal, one year later I was once again billed for one year without any reminder what so ever.

Total mess

A little disappointed to be completely honest

I joined following the interactive content being removed from Netflix because I'd come to depend on the 'countryside train' sleep story to get me to sleep when I'm struggling. It's not on the website and email requests are answered by people who do not have the ability to resurrect it even if they wanted to. I will happily renew my annual subscription into nx year if someone senior in headspace can add this content back onto the app or explain to me why this is not possible (does the sleep story belong to the narrator and not Head Space itself, or is it just administratively awkward because it's on an old data base or something?). Please can someone in headspace answer my enquiry fully? Thank you in advance. I have tried (and continue to try) other sleep stories but they're simply not as good - the narrator of countryside train is better (his tone and pace is better - for a sleep story), as is the sleep story itself (it genuinely transports me to a happier place in my mind). Please help!

Scam

Scam! They are making it seem like you are signing up for a 14-day trial, but actually you are signing up for a year which then includes a 14-day free period. Won’t refund me.

I got charged 1 year subscription when I was in trial version. They replied they can't do nothing cause I have subscribed by google playstore..... google bot can't see anything wrong.

This system must need to be changed. I not even using the app cause has not any use for me... I would have preferred give that money to who really need it... not them!

The funny thing I thought I was an unfortunate case... but here there are many like me!!!! 💀💀💀

Fan since 2021

I have used this app since 2021. There was a while that I didn’t use it, then picked it back up again a while back. I see many have issues with the subscription. I did have an issue back in 2023, they were responsive and corrected the issue but that was back in 2023. It should be noted that I continually have issues w/ 99% of most all other subscriptions I have, so it is what it is, I’m sure I’m not alone here. I always make certain to check NO automatic renewal. This cannot be done from your phone. I also always cancel and get new credit cards yearly so that no online subscription (renewal or no renewal) can pull from my account. It’s extra work yes, but in the 2025 climate worth the security. That said, I do really like this app. I like the daily “sets” that I can play or skip. I also really like the AI Ebb for daily journaling. I can write, it summarizes my thoughts and archives it; very nice feature.
I do wish they had more sleep time stories. The narrator, Simon of “Slow Train” is apparently a fan fav. that is what originally got me to sign on; as is “Rainy Day Antiques.” I wish they would get Simon to do more of them. I do hope they work to fix their issues because I do find value in their service. At $69/yr or $5.75/m last time I checked, it is for me at least, my preference over any cable TV subscription.
