Worst financial institution ever. Can't even take a credit card payment over the phone. No automated phone system for credit cards.

A complete disaster …

would like to share my experience with this credit union, which has unfortunately not been a positive one. I found their services related to personal loans and credit cards to be a complete disaster. You know what happened and how I feel, they are there to spoil your credit history or score whatever circumstances you are in.

I encountered transaction from my account without clear explanations, and I noticed that their interest rates are very high despite what you hear. Their penalty charges are also always there. Don’t trust them but if you decide to stay with this so called Credit union, don’t ever take a loan and please check your transaction history all the time though it id difficult to do it on daily basis.

Additionally, their customer service representatives except very very few are not helpful. It seems that once you signed their paperwork, you are done. They will spoil your credit history or score if you miss a payment by mistake or any other circumstances like me. They put no effort to provide support or clarification on your concerns like any other credit union or bank. It is very clear that they undervalue their customers.

Overall, my impression is that this credit union prioritizes profit over customer care. I would strongly advise anyone considering their services to explore other credit union or banking options that definitely offer a more trustworthy and supportive experience. Stop with BECU

Wasted an hour of my time with 3 different calls and 4x on holds to come up empty in getting an account

Manager was nice when I left feedback and understands that there is NO reason as to why I was not notified of this withing the first 5 min the first time I gave my Texas address.

BECU is behind the times. I do not recommend BECU based simply on the on the poor customer service provided.

My experience is that BECU is completely behind the times and is seriously lacking in customer service. Each experience I have had has been so frustrating, starting with the ABSOLUTE WORST phone tree, ending with bad, condescending customer service. I do not recommend BECU. I have not had any issues at either of the other two local Credit Unions where I have been a member for many years. I will close my BECU account as soon as this auto loan is repaid.

Exceptional Business Banking Experience…

Exceptional Business Banking Experience – Seattle Hill BECU

I scheduled an appointment to open a business account at BECU—my wife and I already use them for personal banking and they never disappoint. I arrived early and was warmly greeted by Branch Manager Mr. Rodriguez, who knew my name and exactly why I was there. His knowledge of business banking and attention to detail made the process smooth and reassuring for someone new to starting a business.

Later, I worked with Renée, who was equally outstanding—thorough, kind, and incredibly helpful. She walked my wife and me through the process, made sure we were set up correctly, and explained everything clearly. I returned again to handle a business fee and once more, Renée provided excellent service and support.

This branch sets the gold standard for customer service and professionalism. Highly recommend them if you’re launching a business or just want a bank that truly cares!

can't see if checks have been cashed

BECU is like credit unions, non-profit. Few fees. Friendly, local people. But their app is horrible. In addition, when you send a check online, the money is removed from your account immediately. You cannot see if the check has cleared. You will just get notified by the recipient that you are late...or perhaps lost the mortgage or insurance plan. You have to call and then speak to a different organization.

Yes, the money is taken from your account and may never be paid by BECU. You assume it's been paid and they keep the money.

You have to wait until your next statement date. Your. statement will not list the recipient. How's that for going through your statements when doing taxes, or trying to show you paid a bill...or even finding out.

Even the staff at the branch cannot tell you.

Every other institution shows checks that have not been cashed. You have no ability to track this.

This bank takes your deposits but will…

This bank takes your deposits but will do everything not let you withdraw. They only let you spend $2000 per day. I tried to send a bank wire to daughter for $7500 and the person in the wire department Nolan began to question me as to why. I told him I needed it for moving expenses and he refused and had to put me on forever hold. He told me me I may be a terrorist or be doing money laundering by sending $7500 to my own daughter. I am still on hold now. Based upon my experience, I cannot recommend you do business with them

Longtime customer, considering other options. You should too.

Been a longtime customer, and my family has banked with them for decades. Their customer service used to be excellent, and was a major reason I stayed with them this whole time. In 2025, that changed as I would get small, routine payments to services like Google, Youtube, and others blocked on my credit card. Calls to their customer support are not helpful, as they just blame the CC company. That's great, but your customers are still being affected by it, perhaps you should get with the CC companies and work something out. It causes a lot of pointless friction and time wasted, and getting CCs locked down can leave people stranded abroad or worse.

Speaking of call times, they are getting longer and their phone tree more obtuse to get through. Not the worst, but less helpful and quick than it used to be in years past.

Also, god forbid you miss a payment. It used to be that I could miss one or two CC payments (through hardship or otherwise) and I wouldn't get but a gentle reminder from a rep and an offer to work things out. Now they simply yank the minimum payment from your account within 10 days, no notification, AND sick harassing, demeaning Collections calls on you.

As others have shown, as long as you toe the line and have no issues, it can be a good bank. The moment that toe slips out of line even a little, they get just as ugly and brutish as any of the Big Banks, regardless of how long you've been with them. Proceed with caution and weigh them against other options out there.

ZERO Stars.

ZERO Stars.

After years of building my credit line with BECU, they unexpectedly reduced it by over 75%. Despite having an excellent credit score and paying off my credit card in full in the fall of 2023, my account was significantly underutilized. Despite numerous calls and complaints, I received no response or acknowledgment from BECU regarding the impact this decision has had on my credit score and that of countless other members. This situation is utterly unacceptable and unforgivable. Not a single leader from BECU's lending team has reached out to address this issue.

BECU totally dropped the ball on HELOC application

BECU totally dropped the ball on a HELOC application. Loan officer transferred application to a Sarah and 4 days later, it was still on the pile and she never followed up with us on anything. We have been a BECU customer for 27 years and have excellent credit. Beyond upset with BECU

Used to be good... Now it's HORRIBLE SUPPORT FROM 3rd WORLD COUNTRIES!

It USED to be good... then they 'offshored' telephone support and it is BEYOND HORRIBLE. The "agents" have HORRIBLE ENGLISH and are difficult to understand. THEY ARE ALSO HIGHLY UNCOOPERATIVE!

While I do appreciate their fraud protection, IT TOO IS BEYOND ABSURD. They will CANCEL your card if a 'fraudulent' charge is detected.

If you're lucky, you'll get a phone call, OTHERWISE, YOU WON'T FIND OUT UNTIL YOU TRY TO USE THE CARD AND IT'S DECLINED!

Whether you call them, or they call you, the agent starts blabbering off charges from your statement. If you don't recognize the charge, instead of blocking that vendor, THEY IMMEDIATELY CANCEL YOUR CARD.

As a result, I've been through FIVE CREDIT CARD NUMBERS IN THE PAST TWO YEARS, which makes it a big pain if you are using it to pay for subscriptions!

To add insult to injury, THEY WILL NOT RUSH SHIP A REPLACEMENT CARD, SO YOU ARE AWAY FROM HOME, YOU ARE SCREWED FOR SEVERAL WEEKS UNTIL YOUR CARD SHOWS UP

THEY DID THIS TO ME WHILE I WAS ON VACATION, I told them:
"I am on vacation and have no way to verify this until I get home... I STILL NEED TO USE THIS CARD TO PAY FOR VACATION EXPENSES. PLEASE BLOCK THAT SUSPICIOUS CHARGE WITHOUT CANCELING MY CARD, and I will confirm the charge when I get home."

The automaton on the other end told me:
"We can't do that, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE BLOCKED UNTIL YOU CONFIRM THIS CHARGE", so either way, YOU WON'T HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNT!

When I asked if they could do an emergency card issue (as many good card companies do). They will say that
"WE CAN NOT DO THAT. YOU WILL RECEIVE YOUR NEW CARD IN 2 WEEKS."

THEY DON'T GIVE A DAMN THAT THEY'VE LEFT YOU STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!

I have SEVERAL other credit cards, and NONE of them have pulled this crap. I think that I've had TWO that actually canceled a card due to a fraudulent charge.

IT HAS GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I CAN NOT TRUST BECU WHEN I AM TRAVELING BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO BE STRANDED!!

ONE OTHER PROBLEM: There is NO WAY to make a payment to a BECU Credit Card from ANY OTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTION, so if have other accounts, YOU HAVE TO DEPOSIT THE MONEY INTO YOUR BECU CHECKING ACCOUNT BEFORE YOU CAN PAY YOUR CREDIT CARD BILL!

Do NOT put you hard earned money in…

Do NOT put you hard earned money in this credit union! God forbid your spouse passes away suddenly and you can't make your payment until your home sells!! THEY DO NOT CARE, they want their money, they will drain your bank account to get what is owed to them and suspend any credit cards you have with them as well! THEY WILL NOT WORK WITH YOU! The mortgage company was way more understanding and worked with me the whole time. BECU just took my money and left me with nothing to pay bills!!

I have an auto loan with this credit…

I have an auto loan with this credit union and their online system is terrible. It is actually really hard to make a payment or transfer money to your accounts. What a crazy system that makes it hard to get your money into their bank. I've worked with a handful of different banking options and this is by far the worst. Not even close.

Very poor customer service

Had a car loan with because. Very hard to work with. Consistently messed up extra payments on principal. Hard to get it corrected. Phone service was terrible wait times and then failed to resolve the issue. Took several calls each month to correct payment errors. We will never use this service for anything again.

Long time BECU member

Long time BECU member, here. For a couple weeks, I’ve been getting 2fa texts on my phone at all hours. The texts say to call them to let them know if you get one you weren’t expecting. Customer rep, when I finally got one, said just ignore them, but I get many in a row when I’m trying to get into my account, which is concerning. Today I tried to solve the problem by getting a secure key but had to call BECU to find out how to get it working. Started calling at 4:45 pm. No problem—they’re available till 7. I’m patient. The phone system hung up on me again & again until finally I tried the chat—and chat is not secure, folks, but after an hour, I was desperate.

Got a woman calling herself Norma. Nice. Apologetic. I politely but firmly told her about the phone system cutting me off. Well, she said, we’ve got 32 phone reps here waiting for calls right now. 32 phone reps available and none of them getting calls bc the phone system is cutting them off, I returned. She said she might (yep, might) have to report this to IT. From that, I surmised that it takes a lot of doing even for the insiders to report things there at BECU these days—apparently enough to make her pause, anyway.

After a wee bit of machination, I told her why I was calling, and she said she could put me though to tech. Great, I said, and the next response was from tech.

This is what the message said—keep the page open, we’ll be with you in 13 hours.

I’m not even angry, just laughing by this time. 32 agents waiting for calls, none coming in, they might report the fact that calls aren’t getting through, and now the very best the good ppl at BECU, who handle our family and business finances can do, is tell me to keep my phone open here for 13 hours? Me & my son have been laughing since I checked out of chat.

Incidentally, I’m one of those so-called woke ppl mentioned by another reviewer, here. In fact, we’re a whole family that believes in hard work and stands for human rights for every person with a pronoun. (Yours, too). Since we’re giving our personal opinions now in reviews like this, I’m not going to deride any individual, just say that maybe what we all ought to be focusing on isn’t tearing one another down, but the fact that since 1973, Congress has devolved to the point that banks & credit unions sell our financial information outright—yep, that of all humans that participate in commerce, and they don’t care what color or flag we march under, or for. They don’t care about any of us, equally. So how about we stop playing this game and get to work solving this appalling state of our nation?

Discrimination against female senior citizen.

Went to a local branch as I wanted the last three months of statements looking for a particular charge. Couldn't download as site wouldn't accept the new password that BECU gave me. Branch employee wanted to see my driver's license. It had expired 3 days before this visit. She refused. Attempting to get a replacement drivers license. Better chance winning the Lotto. Want to bet she would treat a guy the way she treated me (Senior Citizen) Date is a guestimate.
