When you bring a pet into your home, you want to make sure that they have everything they need to stay safe and healthy. After all, they're members of our families and we want them to be as comfortable and safe in our homes as possible.
Keeping our beloved pets safe should always be a top priority — especially when it comes to the environment inside our homes. Whether you have cats, dogs, or other animals, taking the necessary steps to create a pet-friendly home is essential for their wellbeing—and yours. Here are some tips to help you get started with creating a safe and secure space for your pets:
1. Be aware of potential hazards in your home
The first thing you’ll want to do is look around your home - you might be surprised by just how many potential pet hazards you can see. This includes things like:?
Household cleaning supplies
Pesticides
Medications
Human foods that may be toxic to pets (like chocolate, onions, garlic)
Ornaments and decorations that could pose a choking hazards
Certain essential oils?
Even some house plants that could be poisonous
When you’re aware of the hazards you can be sure to keep them well out of your pet’s reach, or avoid having them in your home altogether.?
2. Secure electrical wires and cords away from curious teeth and claws
Look around your home for any areas where you have electrical cords or wires that your pet might be able to get their paws on. Pets are curious beings and they may be tempted to chew on cords or wires which can cause electrocution or other serious injuries. To prevent this from happening, you could consider products like using cord protectors to cover any exposed wires around the house. You should also keep cords tucked away so they're harder for your pet to access.?
3. Keep household cleaners out of reach?
Household chemicals can also be hugely problematic for your pets. Be sure to store all cleaning solutions, detergents, and other toxic substances in a locked cabinet or space where your pet won't be able to get into them. Make sure you keep the lids on tightly as some clever pets may be able to open containers if they aren't secured properly. 4. Make your furniture safe to protect your pet from injury
When it comes to furniture, there are several steps you can take to make your home safe for pets. Many types of furniture contain sharp edges that could cause your pet harm if they rub up against them too hard or jump on top of them. Use corner guards and padding to soften any corners around the house and ensure that your pet is safe from potential injury (but be sure to choose products that your pet can’t potentially steal and swallow). You’ll also want to think about the materials your furniture is made from: are they safe for your pet? Research if materials are toxic and consider ways to keep your pet safe (for example by keeping the furniture away from them or using a cover).?
5. Give your pet plenty of space to explore and play safely
Make sure there's enough room for your pet to move around freely and have access to toys, beds, and other items that will keep them entertained. Create designated areas in your home for your pet that they can call their own so they always feel comfortable and secure. Don’t forget to check for potential hazards like small objects that may be choking hazards and areas where pets can fall or become injured in.?
6. Secure windows and balconies to prevent falls
Windows should be kept closed tightly so that pets can’t squeeze through them. Screens may not be strong enough to hold up against playful animals, so make sure they are well-secured in place. You might want to think about installing safety gates around stairs and check for any open gaps that might allow pets to escape.
